What’s New for 2008
The SIG theme for 2008 is ‘ Aviation in the Falkland Islands 1931-2008’.
This theme includes:
• Aircraft of the Falkland Islands Government
Air Service (FIGAS) founded in 1948 and celebrating it’s 60th
Anniversary in 2008.
• The first ever flight over the Falkland Islands in December 1931 by French Navy CAMS-37A seaplane.
• The first direct flight to the Falklands in April/May 1952 by Aquila Airways Shorth Hythe flying boat..
• Privately-owned aircraft based in the Falkands.
• Aircraft of the British Antarctic Survey
(previously FIDS, Falkland Islands Dependancies Survey) all registered
in the Falklands.
• Military aircraft connected to the Falkland islands from 1931-1939.
• WW2 Falklands avaition.
• RN and RAF aircraft in the islands from 1946-
present: Falklands Conflict aircraft; Phantoms andTornado F.3’s
of 1435 Flt RAF; Falklands based helicopters RN and RAF; Falklands
Airbridge aircraft etc
• Civil aircraft flying to the islands from Argentina and Chile, 1960- present.
